Meg Bryant, Alacare Care Transition Coordinator (CTC) for the Auburn/Phenix City area was kind enough to share her answers to some questions about how she became motivated and started a personal health wellness plan. What motivated you to see your doctor and discuss your health? “I received the email about the new Alacare Wellness Program stating that by seeing your Doctor and getting a form filled out you could save on your insurance plan. So I made an appointment with my Doctor.” Did your physician initiate your change in lifestyle or did you see the need? “It was a mutual decision. I knew I had been gaining weight- sedentary lifestyle, poor eating and such. But when I got on the scales, I was the highest weight I had ever been. I knew I had to do something but was so overwhelmed at that time. It just seemed way too BIG of a challenge. Do you have any tips for someone trying to start a personal wellness plan? “You just have to make a decision and find what works for you. A plan for someone else it not YOUR PLAN. I downloaded an app called My Fitness Pal. I chart every day what I eat, and exercise. It helps me keep up. Charting wasn’t so hard since we do it every day for work. Get an accountability partner. Someone to talk through difficult days with, and also someone who will celebrate the small victories. How do you stay motivated? “I am a morning person. I try to walk in the mornings. It gives me a great start to the day. I am seeing results and already feeling so much better. The increased energy has kept me the most motivated. What changes have you made to your lifestyle that is making the biggest impact? “I have quit grabbing and going at lunch. My lunch is packed before I leave home. I have snacks every few hours even if I am not hungry. It keeps me from overeating. I have quit drinking any regular cokes and sweet tea. I have increased my water intake. Also, the walking has been a game changer!” What results are you already seeing? “Since May 1, I have lost 20 pounds. Also, I have already gone down a size or two in my clothes. “I have a long way to go to my goal, but at least I have taken the first step- and that one seemed to be the hardest,” says Meg as she continues her personal wellness plan to reach her goals.
